The Quezon City Jail has three times the number of detainees than it should, making it the most populated jail in Metro Manila.
Made to house just 800 detainees, it currently has 2,822. So many that jail authorities have had to put up “mezzanines” in the cells to maximize space, the Manila Bulletin reports.
Some detainees have even been forced to sleep under guard in the jail’s basketball court.
The report quotes QC warden Joseph Vela as saying there had been plans for a 1.5-hectare jail in Payatas but nothing has come of those plans yet.
“We are waiting hopefully that plans would start again and that we could plan relocating,” he said.
