Most teenagers wouldn’t want to go to a school event on a weekend but on Saturday, more than 16,000 high school students from Quezon City schools did just that in an attempt to break a world record.

PINASayang Sining (A portmanteau of Pinas or Pilipinas and the phrase “art made fun”) was an initiative headed by school supplies brand Expressions and the Quezon City government held in the Quezon City Memorial Circle.

The nearly hour-long lesson used a large screen and speakers to teach participants how to draw a mask using crayons.

According to the Quezon City government, 16,692 students from 32 schools participated in the event, breaking the record for the largest art lesson in a single venue that an organization in India set in 2014 with more than 14,000 people.

Guinness World Records will still need to validate the results and the official announcement of the new record is set to be on April 20.

Many of those who attended the event in Quezon City shared photos online and said they were glad to be part of history.

While the students will have to wait months to validate their new record, a more immediate reward for sitting under the hot Manila sun is that they don’t need to go to school today.

“All of the students who are present here will have no classes this coming Monday,” Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista said.

Music to every student’s ears.
