Sometime soon, Quezon City residents will have to pay to have their trash collected.
“The Quezon City council has approved on third and final reading an ordinance requiring residents to pay for the collection and proper disposal of their garbage, despite criticism that the local government is supposed to render these services for free,” reports Jeannette I. Andrade in the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
The measure, which is authored by District 1 Councilor Victor Ferrer Jr., was enacted by the council on Dec 20. Under the ordinance, “an annual garbage fee ranging from PHP100 to PHP500 will be imposed on households depending on their lot area.”
Here’s the real killer: Homeowners’ associations and owners of high-rise condominiums or apartments may have to pay higher fees.
The report likewise revealed that “a homeowner who refuses to comply will be charged an amount 25-percent higher than the unsettled fee and a 2-percent monthly interest until payment is made.”
The measure just needs the signature of Mayor Herbert Bautista. It will take effect after publication in a newspaper of general circulation.
