QC gov’t offters to buy homes, relocate residents of Gumamela and Ilang-Ilang streets in Roxas District

How much are they talking about?

“The Quezon City government plans to purchase the homes of local residents in Gumamela and Ilang-Ilang streets in Barangay Roxas District who have suffered and endured at these flood–prone areas every time strong rains come, reports Chito A. Chavez in Manila Bulletin.

Elmo San Diego chief of the city’s department of public order and safety (DPOS)—who is also the action officer of the city’s disaster risk reduction management council (DRRMC)—is backing the move.

San Diego pointed out that it “will benefit 80 to 100 families who have exposed, time and again, to extreme danger each time heavy rains pour.”

“These families are the same people being rescued and prioritized for evacuation during heavy rains every year,” San Diego said.

San Diego added that “the majority of these families occupy their property legally since they have land titles to show as proof of ownership.” So, he said, “the city’s planned buy-out just to convince them to relocate to a safer place.”

Whether the residents will agree or not remains to be seen.
