Because it’s easier to build a bigger jail than to prevent people from becoming criminals.

“The Quezon City government has acquired a 3.4-hectare property amounting to PHP136.9 million in Barangay Payatas that will be the site of the new Quezon City Jail,” reports Janvic Mateo in The Philippine Star.

The report noted: “Mayor Herbert Bautista recently signed the deed of absolute sale with the representatives of M.S. Florendo and Sons, Inc., the registered owner of the property. The acquisition of the property was pushed through following the approval of the city council last year.”

Moreover, the City Council said the property, situated along Payatas Road, is “the most convenient spot for the relocation of the city jail in terms of location and land area.”

The existing Quezon City Jail, located in Barangay Kamuning, has been deemed as “too congested” and “could no longer accommodate additional correctional facilities or buildings for expansion.”

According to records, there are 2,993 male detainees at the Quezon City Jail. Another 595 female inmates are detained at the Quezon City Female Dormitory located inside Camp Karingal.

The report added that “Bautista has asked the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) to study the possibility of moving the female dormitory to the Payatas property as well.”
