QC councilor files ordinance to censor comedy bar jokes

It should be so simple: If you can’t take being made fun of in a comedy bar, then don’t go to a comedy bar. However, some people want to entertain their inner censors.

“Claiming that stand-up comedians or impersonators at local nightspots have gone way below the belt with their brand of humor, Quezon City 3rd District Councilor Allan Benedict Reyes has filed an ordinance calling for the censorship of these live performers by a regulatory board that would also have the power to penalize their employers,” reports Julie M. Aurelio in Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Reyes claimed “a complaint from a concerned citizen who was offended by the comedians at a certain bar prompted him to make the proposal.”

Reyes’ measure, if approved, would penalize bar owners, operators and managers who allow such performances with imprisonment of two to five years, plus fines ranging from PHP2,000 to PHP5,000.

Reyes must be joking.
