QC council wants longer paternity leave

Because, seriously, this is one provision that remains outdated. (Let’s not even get started with the current maternity leave specs.)

“The Quezon City council is reviewing a proposed resolution that seeks to extend to 14 days the paternity leave for fathers whose spouses give birth through Caesarian section (C-section),”reports Jeannette I. Andrade in the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

The draft measure—which is authored by 5th district Councilor Julienne Alyson Rae Medalla—seeks to amend the Paternity Leave Act of 1996, which only grants a seven-day paid leave to men whose wives or partners have just given birth.

Medalla cited the fact that if the man’s partner undergoes a C-section, she would need his assistance for a longer period.

The report said that if and when the resolution is confirmed on third and final reading, the city council will ask Congress to amend the Paternity Leave Act of 1996 to include the proposed change.
