While a puppy wrapped in a bow sounds like an adorable Valentine’s Day gift, an animal welfare organization has a reminder for couples looking to cash in on the puppy love — don’t act so fast.

As Valentine’s Day draws near, Aspin Academy — with aspin short for asong Pinoy or Filipino dog — reminded couples that puppies are more than just love day presents; they’re a lifetime responsibility.

“How many days to go and it’s Valentine’s Day! For some, this is just an ordinary day but to others, this might be a very special day,” the organization wrote on Facebook.

“And, since it’s a special day to some, may magreregalo na naman ng mga puppy (there are people planning to give puppies as gifts).”

Aspin Academy said that there is nothing wrong with gifting these pups to loved ones, as long as “the receiver knows that having a puppy is a lifetime commitment.”

The organization lamented about these poor animals being given away once couples break up.

“Hindi yun nagbreak lang kayo ng jowa ninyo, tapon niyo na si puppy kase the puppy reminds of your ex. Wag ganun mga mam en ser! (Don’t abandon the puppy just because you and your partner break up and the puppy reminds you of your ex. That’s now how you do it, ma’am and sir!)

And in case you’re still bent on marking February 14 with a doggo, Aspin Academy serves couples an even better suggestion: why not adopt a shelter dog?

“Not only do you make your loved one’s Valentine’s Day so special, but you are also giving a shelter dog a special life forever,” Aspin Academy wrote.

Founded in 2019, Aspin Academy is a non-profit organization that rescues dogs and cats, and is committed to educating more Filipinos about the value of aspin and puspin (village dogs and cats).

So there you have it: adopt, don’t shop this Valentine’s Day!
