Provincial bus routes may re-open soon, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) announced today.

LTFRB National Capital Region director Zona Russet Tamayo told the news program Unang Hirit that this comeback is expected to happen in the next few weeks.

“There’s no specific date, but we’re trying to facilitate, expedite the return of provincial buses hopefully in the next couple of weeks. We will start with provinces near Metro Manila, such as Regions III and IV. Then eventually, we will ease out to farther regions and re-open them,” Tamayo said in English and Filipino.

The LTRFB is currently in talks with various local governments to come up with a uniform set of requirements for passengers so that they can easily prove that they are allowed to cross provincial borders. These requirements may include a travel clearance from the local government, a police clearance, and a government-issued ID.

Mass transport was suspended in March after most of the country was placed on lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19. As a consequence, millions of Filipinos have lost their jobs and thousands of small and medium businesses have shut down.
