President Elpidio Quirino died on a leap year and, now, his remains have been reinterred at the Libingan ng mga Bayani during another leap year.
In time for his 60th death anniversary, Quirino’s remains were transferred from the Manila South Cemetery in Makati City where it had been buried when he died 1956.
“The Quirino family, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, government officials, police, military and representatives of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines joined the send-off ceremony for his remains at the Manila South Cemetery. During the program, Makati Mayor Kid Peña stressed that Quirino was an exemplary leader who inspired compassion by offering asylum to World War II refugees,” reports ABS-CBN News.
The report recalled: “Quirino was 65 when he died of heart attack at his residence in Novaliches on February 29, 1956. Then President Ramon Magsaysay declared a 15-day period of national mourning for Quirino. He is the third Philippine president to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani after Carlos P. Garcia and Diosdado Macapagal.”
