Could this terrible tragedy have been prevented?

“On Monday, February 16, a pre-dawn fire of undetermined origin razed at least 300 houses in a residential area in Merville Park in Pasay City,” reports GMA News Online.

The report revealed that four people — including a woman who was four months pregnant and an 8-year-old child — died in the blaze.

The report noted: “According to radio dzBB’s Luisito Santos, the fire at Barangay 201 had reached the general alarm as of 5am, while GMA News TV’s Balitanghali said that fire out was declared at 8:57am.”

The report explained that “Amost of the residents in the area were informal settlers and their makeshift residences were scheduled to be demolished in 2016.” The report added that the area is near the boundary of Pasay and Parañaque.
