Sometime after the mass held at the Tacloban airport, Pope Francis had to make an annoucement that visibly pained him.

“I’d like to tell you something that displeases me. The plan was that the plane would leave at 5pm. There’s a (typhoon) that’s around us and the pilots have insisted that we have to leave at 1pm,” he said.

The Pope added, “I apologize to you all. I am truly saddened because I had something prepared especially for you.”

The Pope’s gift, a mosaic called “Madonna of the People,” will be installed at the Palo Cathedral.

“Philippine National Police-National Capital Region Police Office Regional Director Carmelo Valmoria confirmed in a text message to Inquirer.net that the Pope will be leaving Leyte at 1pm instead of the scheduled 5pm,” reports Inquirer.net.

Typhoon Amang (international name: Mekkhala) has intensified, putting Leyte, as well as other spots in the region, under public storm warning Signal No. 2.
