A man was shot dead by a police officer after allegedly stabbing a fellow passenger he was seated next to in a bus in Davao City earlier today.
ABS-CBN News identified the assailant as 41-year-old Junie Luceño and the policeman as PO1 Reynald Valdez, a member of the Traffic Group in the Davao City Police.
Junie’s sister Winnie Luceño, said that they were riding a bus to Davao City Overland Terminal when her brother suddenly stabbed the man next to him, identified as 33-year-old Joel Salazar, on the head.
Junie then went down from the bus and Winnie followed soon after. Valdez was regulating traffic in the area when Winnie told him to arrest her brother, ABS-CBN News reported.
Valdez said that he ended up shooting the assailant in self defense after the latter allegedly tried to stab him. This resulted in two bullet wounds in Junie’s body.
“I made him get down [on the floor], but he suddenly stood up and attacked me. He almost stabbed me, that’s why I shot him,” Valdez told ABS-CBN News in Filipino.
Winnie said that her brother was not mentally ill but his motive for stabbing the man is still unknown.
Salazar, the bus passenger who was stabbed, was rushed to the hospital.
