Police promise 15-minute response time to crime

The Philippine National Police has promised to respond to crimes within 15 minutes and to increase the number of its officers on patrol by 25 percent, Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto said Wednesday.

Recto said the PNP included these targets in a “promissory note” attached to its request for an annual budget of P72.1 billion for 2014. Recto welcomed the PNP’s promise, saying “If pizza companies can promise to deliver your pizza in 30 minutes or you get it get free, then why can’t the police have that same response time in life and death situations?”

He added the police must be given the resources it needs to curb crime. The PNP is asking for P100 million for new buildings, P1.8 billion for new vehicles, and P925 million for equipment in 2014.

Citing PNP data, Recto said there were 217, 812 crimes reported in 2012.
