The Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) will now serve as the lead traffic law enforcement agency on EDSA, the busiest thoroughfare in Metro Manila.

President Benigno Aquino III on Tue, Sep 1, presided over a meeting at the Palace, attended by officials of concerned government agencies and various stakeholders, tackling the worsening traffic situation in the metropolis.

After the meeting, it was agreed upon that priority action will be taken to clear six major intersections that have been identified as “choke points” along EDSA.

These are Balintawak, Cubao, Ortigas, Shaw Boulevard, Guadalupe, and Taft Avenue.

The President also approved the deployment of the PNP-HPG to serve as the lead traffic law enforcement agency on EDSA, with the support of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), Land Transportation Office (LTO), and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

Also among the immediate action steps agreed were stricter enforcement of the bus lanes, clearing of obstructions on EDSA and alternate routes, and continuing consultations with public utility operators, truckers and port users and other stakeholders.
