The plot thickens, indeed.

“Former Tarlac Rep. Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco Jr. — brother of former President Cory Aquino and, naturally, the uncle of President Noynoy Aquino — has admitted that he is among those pushing for change in the country’s leadership but claimed that the initiative was neither a prelude to a coup nor a military takeover,” report Arlyn dela Cruz, Christine O. Avendaño, and Tina G. Santos in Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Cojuangco said that when they referred to the “stepping down of the President,” they are talking about regime change. This means they also want Vice President Jejomar Binay and other officials out.

The report noted: “At his residence in Makati City, Cojuangco was asked if he was the rich businessman referred to by Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago as the one behind the alleged coup plot.”

Cojuangco replied: “No, I’m not because I’m not in favor of a coup. I am against a military takeover. But I am in favor of major reforms or change in leadership, especially in the last crucial 16 months before the 2016 elections.”

The report pointed out that “Cojuangco’s idea of change jibes with the call of Norberto Gonzales — the national security adviser of the Arroyo administration — for the establishment of a ‘transition government’ through a National Transition Council (NTC).”

Cojuangco is the father of Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski.
