The political bromance endures.
On Mon, May 25, President Noynoy Aquino happened to be in Marikina to inspect the preparations for the upcoming school year, which is set to start on Jun 1.
Reporters gathered at the Marikina Elementary School and, of course, also started asking the President questions that weren’t related to general science or simple arithmetic.
Such as, Who is the standard bearer of the Liberal Party for 2016? Kid these days, really!
Aquino reportedly said that he found it “strange” that there were reports going around insinuating that Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas isn’t being considered to be LP’s standard bearer.
Aquino stated, “I find it strange na bakit ganun? In my mind, as far as our coalition is concerned, he is at the top of the list.”
Aquino then went on to praise Roxas, saying, “He has demonstrated quite a wide range of expertise in so many different assignments. He is a valuable member of the Cabinet. He has been a staunch leader of the party, even during the days that we were in the opposition. And kumbaga, he has demonstrated…even the ability to sacrifice. Previously, for instance, when he gave way to me.”
It may be recalled that Roxas had been set to run for President in the 2010 elections, but instead ran for vice president to give way to Aquino. Obviously, Roxas lost to then Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay in the race.
So, let there be no doubt: Mar is still PNoy’s man.
Let’s see if this is still the case when Aquino makes the official announcement on LP’s standard bearer for the 2016 polls after his last State of the Nation Address on Jul 27.
