There’s nothing like Pinoy food to “bring you home” even when you’re thousands of miles away.
“Darren Mendoza — owner of the Lutong Pinoy restaurant in North Miami Beach, Florida — has been staging ‘boodle fights’ at his establishment,” reports Don Tagala on ABS-CBNnews.com.
Mendoza said he thought about presenting the “Pinoy kamayan” style eating to his patrons through the “boodle fight,” an eating tradition which he traces to the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).
At Lutong Pinoy, the mound of food laid out on a banana leaf includes Pinoy fried chicken, kare-kare, sinigang, fired shrimp, grilled fish, deep fried pork belly, egg rolls, tilapia, grilled eggplants with bagoong, salted duck eggs, ensalada, among many others.
The boodle fight sessions have even drawn some Pinoy celebrities in the Miami area such as former teen idol Red Sternberg, who was part of the youth-oriented show TGIS.
Sternberg related, “I’ve brought some of my colleagues, some of my employees, some of the friends who are non-Filipinos (to Lutong Pinoy). Their first impression is, ‘Hmmm…what’s that?’ But as we continued eating, we end up with, ‘Oh this is good.'”
