National Geographic has listed the Pink Sand beach of the Great Santa Cruz Island in Zamboanga as among the best beaches in the world.
Of the dozens of vacation sports in the Philippines, the Pink Beach was the only one to make it to the list.
According to the US-based magazine, “The blush color comes from billions of pieces of crushed red organ-pipe coral, seen in every handful of sand. The number of visitors to the island is regulated.”
The Pink Beach was a favorite of German and Italian tourists during the seventies and the eighties but its popularity eventually declined because of the problematic peace and order situation in the area.
Other beaches featured in the list may be found in Michigan, Mexico, Spain, Iceland, France, England, Curacao, Sardinia, Mauritious, Belize, Hawaii, The Netherlands, California, Oregon, Western Australia, Florida, North Carolina, Cook Islands, Seychelles.
The only Asian destinations included are Lazy Beach in Koh Rong Island, Cambodia and the Pink Sand beach in Zamboanga, Philippines.
