Over a thousand families in Sorsogon province were forced to evacuate after Mount Bulusan erupted Sunday morning.

Residents of the villages of Buraburan, Sangkayon, Puting Sapa, Añog, Bacolod, Catanusan, and Guruyan were ordered to leave their homes immediately as the volcano spew gray plumes and rained ashfall on the towns.

The Sorsogon Provincial Information Office has posted photos of the eruption’s aftermath showcasing streets and rivers covered in ash as cars made their way out of the vicinity of the volcano.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) had placed the Bulusan volcano under Alert Level 1, meaning the volcano was showing signs of abnormal activity.

The eruption on Sunday morning happened at 10:37am and lasted around 17 minutes.

Outgoing Vice President Leni Robredo said yesterday that she and her team will be traveling to Sorsogon immediately for relief operations, with bottled water and face masks identified as immediate needs.
