PHIVOLCS warns public about ‘imminent’ Mt. Mayon eruption

When Mother Nature acts up, we can’t do anything to make her stop.

“After an aerial inspection, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) resident volcanologist Ed Laguerta said an eruption is imminent within the next few days,” reports Dores Bigornia on ABS-CBNnews.com.

Laguerta explained that “although Mayon has remained ‘silent’ in the past several days—earthquakes and rock fall events have even decreased—this could just be a lull before an eruption.”

The report noted: “Laguerta said that Mayon is now spewing moderate white steam, which only means that more pressurization is happening at the bottom of the volcano. This could then lead to an eruption.”

In the event of an eruption, the following municipalities are expected to be affected: Daraga, Sto. Domingo, Camalig, and Legazpi City.

Laguerta reiterated that “all indications show that Mayon is ripe for an explosion and this could happen within days, as opposed to previous statements that it could take weeks.”

Meanwhile, the number of evacuees has risen to 51,983 individuals or 11,255 families.
