Phivolcs director blasts ‘May 28 earthquake’ text hoax

Apparently, there are text messages going around about an earthquake happening on May 28.

Thus, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) director Renato Solidum urged the public to stop spreading text messages that say “a massive earthquake will hit Metro Manila on May 28.” Obviously, the so-called prediction is a hoax.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Solidum was quoted as saying, “As we know, earthquakes can’t be predicted. What we can do is to prepare appropriately for the scenario.”

Solidum had earlier said that a magnitude 7.2 earthquake emanating from the West Valley Fault may kill as many as 37,000 people in Metro Manila.

The 100-kilometer West Valley Fault transects 42 barangays in Quezon City, Marikina, Pasig, Makati, Taguig, Muntinlupa, and 30 barangays in Bulacan, Laguna, and Cavite.

In line with this, Phivolcs recently launched a Valley Fault System Atlas, which has been distributed to local government units.
