Philippines ranks lower than most SEA neighbors in World Happiness Survey

In spite of priding ourselves in being a happy nation, it turns out we’re not so joyous after all.

Ranked the 82nd, the Philippines moved up eight spots in the fourth World Happiness survey conducted by United Nations.

In spite of this year’s higher rankings, we are still in the lower half of the 156 countries included in the survey.

Singapore at the 22nd spot was named the happiest country in Asia.

Thailand was at 33rd place. Taiwan at 35th, Malaysia at 47th and Indonesia was at the 79th spot.

Denmark ranked first in the list of happy places, and Switzerland came in second. Congo, Syria and Burundi are the least happiest nations.

The Happiness Reports were first published by the United Nations in 2012. It seeks to guide governments in making societies happier and healthier.

The survey is based on factors like GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, social freedom, generosity, and absence of corruption.

The report was released ahead of the World Happiness Day on Sunday, March 20. You can view the full report here.
