“The Volcanoes enter the 15-a-side tourney as the top-seeded team and they intend to play true to form on their home front against lower-ranked rivals from Singapore, Sri Lanka and Kazakhstan,” writes Olmin Leyba on The Philippine Star.

The games will be on May 6 and 9 at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bulacan. This will be the first time that the Philippines will host the games.

“I think it’s about time the Volcanoes get back on the winning streak,” says Matt Cullen, the Philippine Rugby Football union director for rugby.

In the Asian 5 Nations Rugby games previously, the Volcanoes ranked fourth behind Japan, Hong Kong, and Korea.

This year, however, the A5N has been restructured into the ARC. Those powerhouses have been clustered together in the Elite Division, with the next four nations — which the Philippines leads — have been bracketed in Division 1.

On May 6, the Volcanoes will face fourth-ranked Singapore and the winner of that round will face either Sri Lanka and Kazakhstan on May 9.

“The Volcanoes are seeking to sustain the momentum from their meteoric rise to the elite level, a feat highlighted by qualification to the 2013 Rugby Sevens World Cup, the first Filipino team to achieve the feat in 50 years,” the report continues.
