A journalist who worked as a correspondent for national newspaper The Philippine Star died after he was stabbed in Daraga, Albay yesterday morning.

Celso Amo, 66  years old, was reportedly stabbed by suspect Adam Johnson Abanes, 33 years old, because of an argument inside a basketball court, The Philippine Star reported.

A witness told ABS-CBN News that he saw Amo exiting the court already with a stab wound on his back. The suspect then allegedly went after him and attempted to stab him again using a 15-inch bolo (machete).

Initial reports obtained by The Philippine Daily Inquirer show that the incident happened at around 8:05am. Abanes allegedly tried to play basketball with Amo but the journalist allegedly refused, making the suspect angry.

Witnesses said Abanes left the basketball court but later came back with the knife.

The Police, who were just across the basketball court when the incident happened, immediately arrested the suspect. Regional police director Chief Supt. Arnel Escobal told The Philippine Star that the suspect has admitted to stabbing Amo.

The suspect’s family told ABS-CBN News that he has not been in the right mind ever since their father died.

Senior Inspector Mayvell Gonzalez told Inquirer that Amo was brought to the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital (BRTTH) but died while being treated.

Apart from working as a journalist for The Philippine Star, the Philippine News Agency, and tabloids, Amo was also editor-in-chief of a publication by the Legazpi City government called The Windows and used to work at the Philippine Information Agency in the Bicol region, Inquirer reported.

He is survived by one son and one daughter.
