Is the Philippine Orthopedic Center facing privatization?

Assistant Health Secretary Enrique Tayag on Thursday allayed fears that the Philippine Orthopedic center would be privatized.

In an Inquirer News report, the health official maintained that the POC would remain a public hospital. He explained that the government is just entering into an agreement with the private sector to upgrade and improve the aging facility.

Tayag explained that as it is, the facility located in Quezon City, is “no longer responsive” to the needs of its patients.

There are plans to build a 700-bed super-specialty tertiary orthopedic hospital within the National Kidney and Transplant Institute compound located at East Avenue, Quezon City. According to reports, the deadline of submission for bids for the project is on April 26.

POC personnel have scheduled a mass walkout on that date.
