Macario Gonzales, 82, died on Mon, Nov 30, while on a 14-hour Philippine Airlines (PAL) flight to Manila from Canada.
“The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) revealed that Gonzales and his wife were on a PAL flight from Vancouver when he complained of back pain seven hours before the aircraft’s scheduled arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2,” reports Jeannette I. Andrade on Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Gonzales asked a stewardess for a hot compress to place against his back.
Four hours after that, at around 1am, members of the flight crew noticed that Gonzales was already unconscious. Gonzales’ wife tried to wake him up but failed.
The report noted: “Another passenger who was a doctor attempted to revive Gonzales but pronounced him dead 30 minutes later from cardio-pulmonary arrest. Thirteen minutes before the PAL plane landed at the NAIA, Gonzales’ death was called in to the airline’s station control.”
The PAL plane landed at 4:47am and Gonzales’ body was temporarily brought to the airport ramp clinic while funeral arrangements were made by his family.
