Philippine Airlines offers to build PHP20-billion terminal annex

To meet increasing demand at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Philippine Airlines has offered to spend at least PHP20 billion (USD400 million) to build an annex for terminal 2.

“We proposed to construct a terminal 2 annex, essentially a whole new terminal connected to the current terminal 2,” Philippine Airlines’ president Jaime Bautista said in a media forum last week.

“We plan to lease an additional 16.3 hectares of land adjacent to our new terminal 2 aircraft parking area. There we can invest up to USD400 million to construct the terminal 2 annex that will dramatically increase the capacity of terminal 2 from the current 7.5 million to as much 20 million passengers per annum,” he added.

They would invest the money themselves or with partners.

According to the Asia Foundation, all four NAIA terminals were designed to hold 30 million passengers a year but the number of actual passengers goes up to 40 million.

A report in GMA News said the proposed annex will have a floor space of 89,000sqm in a 16.3-hectare area adjacent to NAIA terminal 2 where the now-defunct Philippine Village Hotel or the Nayong Pilipino complex and a property owned by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) are.

NAIA’s terminal 2 is exclusively used by Philippine Airlines, the country’s flag carrier.
