Josephine Medina, a 46-year-old table tennis paralympian, won the Philippines its first medal in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio (Sep 7-18), the counterpart of the Olympics for athletes with disabilities.
Medina, a polio victim, took the bronze medal in the women’s singles class 8 division after defeating Germany’s Juliane Wolf on Tue morning, ABS-CBN News reports.
China’s Mao Jingdian took home the gold medal, while France’s Thu Kamkasimphou took home silver.
Five Filipinos were sent to represent the country in the gathering of 4,350 athletes from more than 160 countries around the world.
With Medina are Ernie Gawilan (swimming), Jerrold Pete Mangliwan (athletics), Agustin Kitan (powerlifting) and Adeline Dumapong-Ancheta (women’s +86kg), who won a bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney paralympics.
