What place is safe nowadays?

A mayor in the Philippines with alleged links to illegal drugs was shot and killed this morning during a flag raising ceremony at city hall, police said.

Tanauan, Batangas Mayor Antonio Halili was participating in the city’s weekly flag ceremony this morning when he was shot in the chest by a still unidentified gunman.

According to GMA News, initial reports suspect that the attack was done by a sniper.

The events right before the incident can be seen in a video from the city’s information office, which has been posted and shared online.

The shot can be heard at the 49-second mark just as the Philippine national anthem that the employees were singing was about to end.

Halili was brought to the CP Reyes Medical Center, ABS-CBN News reported but was declared dead on arrival at around 8:45am.

The mayor is known for his controversial “walk of shame” program where he had alleged drug suspects parade around town wearing signs that said: “Ako’y drug pusher, ‘wag tularan (I am a drug pusher, do not imitate me).”

However, last year, he was also tagged in an intelligence report for allegedly having links to the illegal drug trade, an accusation he denied.
