The Department of Justice (DOJ) will send a delegation to the regional meeting on the plight of “boat people” scheduled on May 29 in Bangkok.

Justice Secretary Leila De Lima bared that the DOJ team will be composed of Undersecretary Leah Armamento, Chief State Counsel Ricardo Paras, Jr., and Asst. Chief State Counsel Ruben Fondevilla.

The Philippines has been invited to the meeting, which will be attended by some 15 countries and three United Nations organizations.

The meeting was called as a response to the worsening condition of “boat people” from Myanmar and Bangladesh.

The Philippine government had earlier expressed concern about the plight of the “boat people” and offered to share the country’s experiences in handling refugees and stateless persons, in an effort to be part of the solution of the crisis.

Bernard Kerblat, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ (UNHCR) representative to the Philippines, has lauded the Philippines’ willingness to contribute to international efforts to respond to the crisis.
