PH joins civilization, penalizes drunk driving

It will soon be illegal to drive in the Philippines while drunk or high after President Benigno Aquino III signed the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013 into law on Thursday.

Under the law, law enforcement officers can have drivers take a sobriety test if they seem to be driving under the influence. Failing a sobriety test will mean taking a breath analyzer test or a drug test.

Drivers who speed, weave through lanes, make sudden stops, or smell of alcohol can be subjected to sobriety tests under the new law.

Motorists who get into accidents while under the influence face three months in prison and a fine of from P20,000 to P80,000. Accidents that cause injuries will mean higher fines of from P100,000 to P200,000. If a victim dies because of the accident, the fine goes up to from P300,000 to P500,000, Interaksyon reports.

Aside from jail time, drunk drivers can lose their licenses if convicted.
