PH government will pay for surgery of Manila bus hostage survivor

It’s probably not enough to make up for the horror Yik Siu Ling endured in 2010, when the bus she and her fellow tourists from Hong Kong were on was hijacked by Rolando Mendoza. Eight of her companions had died. Yik’s lower jaw, left thumb and right index finger were shattered by a bullet during the botched rescue operation.

“In a statement released on Tuesday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said that President Benigno Aquino III ordered Cabinet Secretary Jose Rene Almendras to return to Hong Kong and turn over an additional token of solidarity to shoulder the cost of the surgery for the injured Hong Kong resident,” reports Sara Susanne D. Fabunan in Manila Standard Today.

According to the DFA, the token amount was made possible through donations from Filipino businessmen “as a manifestation of the Filipinos’ humane consideration of the plight of the victims and their families, without prejudice to the ongoing ministerial level discussions to address the four demands.”
