PH to get free public wifi starting July 2015

The good news is that the entire country will get free wifi, starting July 2015. The bad news is that the average speed will be 256 kbps. The Department of Science and Technology is behind the massive project.

“According to IT experts, this project will be able to help people in provinces with education, especially since they will have access to government databases. It also offers a cheaper alternative to long-distance phone calls,” reports GMAnetwork.com.

We don’t know if the 256 kbps speed is fast enough for the public to abuse the free wifi, but according to the report, data-capping will be implemented to prevent users from abusing the free service. Hospitals, airport terminals, piers, schools, and government offices are just some of the places where free wifi will be available.

The DOST knows our archipelago make-up will pose a few logistical problems, but never mind. Bidding for partnerships with the private sector will start this month.
