Petition supporting FOI bills gets 38,000 signatures

Will this get the ball rolling on the passing of the much-needed bill?

“An online petition that gathered 38,000 signatures for the swift assage of the Freedom of Information (FOI) bill was submitted to Malacañang Friday morning, July 25,” reports Genalyn Kabiling in Manila Bulletin.

Interestingly enough, the petition started by the Right to Know, Right Now! Coalition through Change.org got more signatures the old-fashioned way rather than online.

As of Thursday, July 24, the petition had 16,235 online signatures and 21,965 written signatures.

The petition was delivered by the coalition’s representatives.

Thus, as the report revealed, “Deputy Presidential Spokeswoman Abigail Valte reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to the passage of the FOI bill while Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda received the FOI petition and held a dialogue with its advocates at the Palace.”

Valte explained that “it was the first time the Aquino government received an online petition seeking immediate passage of the FOI bill.”
