Despite some surveys that say the Philippines is one of the most accepting countries in the world when it comes to the LGBTQ+ community, the real experiences of its members in the Philippines tends to show otherwise — from controversial school haircut policies for LGBTQ kids to the continued push for conversion therapy by some Christian groups.
But despite the bigotry that still sadly persists, there are many bright spots that indicate things continue to change for the better: take the case of this father, who posted a touching photo of his eight-year-old son clad in a mermaid costume for his birthday.
Jan Alexis Avestrus posted a photo of himself carrying his son, who donned a bikini top and a colorful fishtail. In front of the pair were a mermaid-themed cake and cupcakes.
“Born a boy but with the heart of a girl,” he began his post.
“I’m no magician to turn you into a girl, but because I love you, I support whatever you choose to be. You wished to become a mermaid, here it is… don’t let others pull down your flag,” Avestrus added.
Avestrus’ post has been shared over 35,000 times, with many praising him for his open-mindedness.
“Thank you for the acceptance, support, and love for your child. I hope all LGBT kids have a father like you. Salute and respect,” one wrote.
“Now that’s unconditional love,” another said.
But of course, Avestrus’ post attracted some bigoted comments as well.
“Why did you shape him to be soft? Being gay is an abomination in the eyes of the Lord,” one wrote.
Another passive-aggressively posted a link to a church group that supports conversion therapy.
Other commenters came to the rescue.
“What do you care if he treats his son that way? At least he respects him. They are not hurting anybody,” one defended Avestrus and his kid.
