So, technically, Makati City currently has two mayors.
“Makati Vice Mayor Romulo ‘Kid’ Peña Jr. insisted on Wednesday, March 18, that he remains Makati’s acting mayor, saying the temporary restraining order on Mayor Junjun Binay’s suspension can no longer be enforced,” reports Dharel Placido on ABS-CBNnews.com.
In a dzMM interview, Peña said in Filipino, “I assumed the position of being acting mayor. I shall hold office.”
The report noted: “Peña was sworn in as Makati’s acting mayor on Monday, March 16, about an hour after the Ombudsman’s suspension order on Binay was posted on the wall of the Makati City Hall by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG). A temporary restraining order (TRO) was later released by the Court of Appeals (CA) on the suspension order, but it was contested by the DILG, Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Office of the Ombudsman.”
Peña added, “I didn’t want the position. I just followed the DILG’s directive, as all local government officials are under the DILG.”
