Who’s laughing now?
“The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) cracked the whip on Purefoods Star import Daniel Orton, slapping him with a hefty P250,000 fine for his outburst after his team’s loss to Kia last Wednesday, February 18,” reports Rey Joble on InterAksyon.com.
PBA commissioner Chito Salud stated, “For issuing comments that are disparaging, disrespectful of and offensive to his host league, the game officials and a fellow player and head coach of a member-team, a penalty of PHP250,000 pesos is hereby imposed on Mr. Orton.”
Orton issued the scathing comments to reporters on Wed, Feb 18, following his team’s 95-84 loss. He even slammed Filipino boxing icon and Kia playing coach Manny Pacquiao.
Orton had stated, “This game was seriously a joke. The way the game was going, the refs, they made it into a mockery, seriously. They took the game that I know and love and made it into a mockery.”
The report noted: “Pacquiao, who scored his first PBA point in the second period of the game, also did not escape criticisms from Orton.”
Orton had added: “That’s (Pacquiao playing in the PBA) part of the joke I was talking about. Professional boxer, okay. Congressman, alright. Professional basketball player? No. It’s a joke. Seriously, it’s a joke.”
