The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), the country’s fiercely beloved pro b-ball league, announced today that it is canceling all of its games in light of the COVID-19 health crisis.

In a statement on its official website, the PBA said its Board of Governors made the decision in a meeting last night, and the cancellation takes effect today and will be in place until further notice.

“Considering the present situation surrounding COVID-19 and the Presidential declaration of Public Health Emergency, it is our paramount duty and responsibility to ensure the health and safety of our fans, players, teams, officials and staff,” the statement said.

“The league, however, will assess the effects of Covid 19 on a day-to-day basis guided by the parameters set by the DOH and WHO and will remain committed to conduct its games and activities in a safe and responsible manner for all its stakeholders,” it added.

The cancellation covers games in the PBA’s ongoing Philippine Cup, D-League Aspirants Cup, 3×3 inaugurals, and other activities.

Founded in 1975, the PBA has 20 corporate-sponsored teams, including the Alaska Aces, the Blackwater Elite, and the San Miguel Beermen. It was the first of its kind in Asia and the second-oldest professional league in the world, after the National Basketball Association in the U.S.
