While it is the government’s responsibility to enforce environmental regulations, many in the Philippines know that practice seldom meets theory, especially when big businesses are involved — which is why netizens were especially impressed when Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto ordered the closure of a KFC branch within the city after it was found to have violated environmental policies.
The mayor posted photos of the closed branch in the Kapasigan area, alongside images of the grease build-up along its pipes, as well as its wastewater polluting the nearby Parian Creek.
The fast-food establishment also did not have an Environmental Permit to Operate.
“The LGU (local government unit) ordered the closure of KFC Victoria (Kapasigan) earlier. The grease buildup was so thick, their waste water goes straight to the Parian Creek.They do not have an Environmental Permit to Operate (EPO), either,” the mayor wrote in Filipino.
“They may open again once their wastewater treatment gets fixed and they have secured an EPO. I love KFC, but I share this as a warning to other establishments.”
“Our efforts to clean the creeks in 2022, when we had several for cleanup and dredging, would all go to waste if we do not follow environmental regulations,” he said.
“Kudos to you Mayor, I hope other mayors stand their ground just like you,” one netizen said.
“Wow, I wish all municipalities had this same concern for the environment. Good job, Pasig City!” another commented.
“Plus they always run out of thigh and leg parts in that branch, mayor,” another jokingly complained.
