100 Pasay teachers protest cut in Cola

Just three days after the Department of Education led a national Teacher’s Day celebration, about 100 teachers in Pasay City took to the streets to protest a reduction in their cost of living allowance. According to Salvador Alborra, president of the Federation of Public School Teachers Association in Pasay, “the PHP3,500 monthly allowance from the government’s special education fund was reduced to PHP1,200 starting in September,” reports Philippine Daily Inquirer. The decision was made by the Commission on Audit. Pasay Mayor Tony Calixto advised the the teachers to write a letter of complaint to COA. PHP1,200 is how much the teachers were getting in 2008 until the city government granted a request from the teachers to increase their Cola.
