Parañaque starts giving cash benefits to senior citizens in 2014

Respect is good, but the elderly need cash, too.

“The Parañaque City government has announced that the city’s 50,000 senior citizens will be getting cash benefits starting next year with the implementation of the city’s Senior Cash Transfer Program,” reports Mike Frialde on Philstar.com.

Under Ordinance 13-14, senior citizens’ claims and benefits will be processed by the newly-established Parañaque Office of Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA). Qualified seniors will be registered in the OSCA Cares Card System.

The city government has allocated PHP27 million for the first year of its implementation of the program. In the succeeding years, PHP29.5 million will be automatically appropriated for the purpose, “with a provision of a 20-percent increase if deemed necessary by the implementing offices.”

So, starting 2014, “a senior citizen will receive a PHP500 cash gift on his or her birthday and another PHP500 as year-end cash gift under the Cash Transfer Program.” The ordinance also mandates that “a minimum of PHP2,000 in death benefits shall be given to the family of deceased senior citizens.”
