Presidential Assistant for Food Security and Agricultural Modernization Francis Pangilinan is leaving the Aquino administration by the end of the month.
Pangilinan said his resignation will be effective September 30.
He revealed that his resignation is in connection with his plan to run for Senate in 2016. The food security chief has been topping pre-election surveys.
He said he has already discussed his plans with President Aquino before he filed his resignation.
Pangilinan joined the Aquino Cabinet in May 2014. As food security chief, he was tasked to oversee four big agricultural agencies, namely National Food Authority (NFA), National Irrigation Authority (NIA), Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), and Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA).
A graduate of the University of the Philippines Diliman and with a master’s degree from Harvard University Kennedy School of Government, Pangilinan first started his career in politics as councilor of Quezon City from 1988 to 1992.
He won a Senate seat in 2001 and was re-elected in 2007.
