Mea Gey Niñura of Davao Region has received recruitment offers from two American universities after earning the gold medal in the secondary girls 3,000 meter event at this year’s Palarong Pambansa. She clocked in with a record-breaking time of 10:03.4.
In an inspiring story of success, Niñura crossed the finish line with tears welling up on her eyes.
Zamboanga Peninsula coaching staff Andrew William “Enzo” Pirie saw potential in Niñura after seeing her trail behind her biggest competitor. He got in touch with Niñura’s coach, Maylene Quimque.
The golden ticket scholarship offers are from are from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Southern California (USC).
“It’s a great achievement for her,” said Quimque. “I want her to grab the opportunity.”
However, Quimque thinks that the teenage athlete is too young to fly to the US alone.
Discussions about Niñura future are now in the works.
In the country. the University of Santo Tomas has expressed interest in the young trackster.
Renowned athletes like Elma Muros and Lydia Dega are among those who were also discovered in Palarong Pambansa. The annual sports event is now on its 59th year.
