About 1,260 couples exchanged vows in a free wedding ceremony in the municipality of Lala in Lanao del Norte as part of the town’s 73rd foundation anniversary, local publication MindaNews reported.

Couples got hitched in church rites organized by Mayor Angel Yap through the Lala municipal government.

The mayor said that many of their constituents remained unmarried due to financial difficulties even if they live together.

“We want their union blessed by the church. They are now legally married and their offspring are now legitimate children,” the mayor was quoted as saying.

Mayor Angel Yap said that the town’s low-risk COVID-19 alert enabled them to hold the mass ceremony after receiving the go-signal from the Inter-Agency Task Force on COVID-19.
