The chaos that ensued in Metro Manila cemeteries on Friday, November 1, All Saints’ Day was the anti-thesis of the phrase, “rest in peace.” There was no rest and there certainly was no peace.
“At around 2 pm on Friday, it was estimated that more than one million people had trooped to Metro Manila’s cemeteries to visit their dead loved ones,” reports The Philippine Star. The report explained that “the figure excluded those who had gone to the cemeteries earlier and stayed overnight.
To illustrate just how crowded it got, the report cited the case of Metro Manila’s biggest cemetery, the Manila North Cemetery, which is estimated to cover around 50 hectares. The cemetery was packed and its personnel have collected as many as 10 truckloads of garbage.
So much for paying respects to the departed.
