Opposed: Plan to build condos near Jose Abad Santos Memorial School along EDSA

Here’s yet another protest involving not just one, but two, condos.

“Parents of students studying at the Philippine Women’s University-run Jose Abad Santos Memorial School (JASMS) expressed their opposition to a plan to redevelop the JASMS campus along EDSA into a mixed-use property,” reports Iris Gonzales in The Philippine Star.

The property is owned by the Benitez family and STI Educational Systems Holdings Inc.

The report noted: “In a letter to Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista dated Sept. 29, the parents’ association—led by its president, Tito Pijano III—said it is opposed to the request of STI Educational Systems Holdings Inc. for a certificate of exemption that would allow it to build two 33-story residential condominiums and other structures in the JASMS campus.

The group also said “there was no consultation with the parents’ association, student government or other stakeholders regarding the project.” The group feared that “it would be very difficult to “ensure safety in a construction site where there are students of varying ages and needs.”

But STI Educational Systems Holdings Inc. chairman Eusebio Tanco had already earlier announced that they would redevelop the 2.2-hectare property along EDSA.

“We’re trying to do a community-type of development wherein you have a school, a residential development and a mall. We’re trying to experiment on new ideas,” he explained.

STI is developing the property in partnership with Ayala Land and the “total capital expenditure for the school may reach between PHP500 million and PHP800 million.”
