German Agojo, one of the so-called ”Bilibid 19” inmates, was brought to the Philippine General Hospital after suffering a mild stroke.
Agojo is one of the the high-profile inmates of the New Bilibid Prison who were transferred to the custody of the National Bureau of Investigation after they were caught enjoying illegal perks inside the prison.
Agojo’s lawyer, Ferdinand Topacio, is blaming the Department of Justice for his client’s condition.
Topacio said he had requested that Agojo be allowed to get a check-up months ago, but this was ignored.
”Pre-existing condition po iyan. Even before na-transfer siya dyan sa NBI. We even sent a formal letter to the director and si Secretary Leila De Lima ngunit na dedma po,” Topacio said.
”Hindi ko maiwasang sisihin ang Department of Justice dahil kung siguro noon na check-up na iyan, nabiygan ng preventive medication, hindi na sana nahantong sa ganito na na-stroke.”
Agojo is a convicted drug lord who was arrested in 1999. He is serving a life sentence.
Topacio said Agojo’s conviction did not extinguish his rights.
”We’re not asking for special treatment, yung nararapat lang. The point is hindi tama na porket ang isang tao ay detainee ay tatanggalan niyo na yung karapatan niya, lalo na yung karapatan na magkaroon ng medical attention na kanyang sariling choice.”
One of the Bilibid 19 inmates earlier died.
George Sy passed away on July 1, Wednesday, after battling colon cancer. Sy, a Chinese national, was sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the illegal drugs trade.
