Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz is organizing her own weightlifting competition in search for her successor.
Through the help of sponsors and supporters, the 3-time Olympian will be hosting the Hidilyn Diaz Weightlifting Open Championships (HDWOC) from July 8 to 9 at the Meralco Fitness Center.
“Masaya ako at proud na makakapag-hold kami ng weightlifting competition,” said Diaz. “Ito ang way natin para makapag-scout ng mga bagong weightlifters.”
(I am happy and proud that we can hold a weightlifting competition. This is our way to scout for new weightlifters.)
The HDWOC is supported by Meralco, MVP Sports Foundation, Philippine Weightlifting Association (PWA), UP Weightlifting Club and Crossfit Ortigas.
The event will feature 16 different weight classes and will follow international rules to give participants a feel of what it is like to compete abroad.
“Gusto rin naming iparamdam sa kanila na ganito ang nangyayari sa international competition,” said the first Filipina to ever win an Olympic medal.
(I also want to make them feel that this is what happens in international competitions.)
Diaz hopes that through this competition, they will be able to find new athletes who will follow in her footsteps.
