Anyone who knows Philippine history is aware that thousands of people either vanished or were tortured and killed during the martial law era under the administration of President Ferdinand E. Marcos, father of Senator Bongbong Marcos, who is now running for vice president.
That’s why this photo taken by Mark Saludes for ABS-CBN News is ironic. Painfully so.
It shows former First Lady Imelda Marcos on a wheelchair inside Baclaran Church. Taken on Feb 24, the wife of the late dictator had no clue that the Mass, organized by the Promotion of Church People’s Response, was actually a tribute to victims of martial law, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution that overthrew the Marcos dictatorship.
That’s what we call a double whammy.
But the woman who loves her shows managed to stay stoic as several victims recounted their ordeal, though she was seen leaving right after Communion.
PCPR secretary general Nardy Sabino said Marcos’ presence was “coincidental.”
